The iPhone will adopt a USB-C port next year to ditch Lightning

The Type C interface has become the mainstream, and even Apple, which has always used a dedicated interface, now intends to catch up with this trend and switch to the TypeC interface. If this is the case, the interface of MacBook and iPhone will be unified, and it feels much more convenient than before.

According to previous reports, Apple may update the iPhone’s charger this year, and the interface of the original charging head will be updated from the ordinary USB-A port to the USB-C port, and the one on the end of the phone is still Lightning. What’s more, the new charger will support fast charging with up to 18W of power. And today there is news that next year Apple will even abandon the lightning connector, and the iPhone will be equipped with a USB-C port.

The news comes from Digitimes, an authoritative media outlet in the supply chain, who reported that next year, that is, in 2019, the iPhone will be equipped with a USB-C port, which will be a major shift in the product line, and will also announce the end of the mission of the Lightning connector.

Apple has always had a habit of using a dedicated interface, starting in 2007, the iPhone inherited the 30-pin connector of the iPod, until the iPhone 5 in 2012, they replaced the iPhone’s connector with Lightning. At the time, this was opposed by users, not because Apple didn’t support the USB port, but because they couldn’t use their old 30-pin cable.

And from 2012 to 2019, there are 7 years, and it is time for Apple to change the interface of the iPhone, and the USB-C interface seems to be a good choice at this time, after all, the MacBook has already fully embraced the USB-C interface, and if the iPhone and charger also fully embrace USB-C, then it is obviously very helpful for the universality of accessories.

Many people have questioned whether Apple will easily give up the expensive licensing fees of Lightning. After all, if the USB-C port is used in the whole game, it means that third-party cables can also be used on the iPhone. In this regard, industry insiders said that with the rise of wireless charging, AirDrop and other functions, users’ dependence on cables has been reduced, even if you take a step back, Apple still has MFi certification!
